Raleigh Newborn Photographer Michelle Gunton Photography
Those first few days home with your baby go by in a blur of late nights, tiny yawns, and a love you didn't know you had room for. Growing a human is kind of a big deal — and so are the first few weeks of getting to know them. Before the newness wears off, before they're suddenly a month old and somehow twice the size, let's capture it.
I'm Michelle Gunton, a newborn photographer serving Raleigh, Wake Forest, Louisburg, and the greater Triangle. For nearly two decades, I've photographed newborns for families across this area, and more than 400 sessions in, I've learned that the best photos happen when everyone's relaxed — not rushed through a checklist of poses.
Still expecting? I'd love to meet you before your little one arrives. Many of my newborn families begin with a maternity session, creating a beautiful story from pregnancy through your baby's first days.
Why Families Choose Michelle Gunton Photography
Sessions here feel less like a photoshoot and more like a couple of unhurried hours spent simply being with your new baby, while I quietly capture what's actually happening — the yawns, the tiny fists, the way your partner looks at this brand-new person. Families keep coming back for their second and third babies (and sending their friends) because nothing here feels stiff or transactional.
Nearly twenty years of doing this means very little rattles me anymore — a fussy latch, a mid-session diaper blowout, a baby who simply isn't feeling it that day. I've seen it all, and I know how to work around it without anyone feeling stressed.
A Session Built Around Your Family
No two families want the same thing from their newborn photos, so every session is planned around you — your home, your story, your baby's personality as it starts to emerge.
Before we ever pick up a camera, we talk through what matters most to you. The final images are delivered as heirloom-quality artwork and albums designed to be passed down through your family, not just posted and scrolled past. And because I handle everything from that first inquiry through final delivery, the whole experience stays relaxed and full-service — you're never left wondering what happens next.
This is the kind of experience families are searching for when they look for the best newborn photographer in Raleigh — not just someone with a camera, but someone who makes the whole process feel easy.
Studio vs. In-Home Newborn Photography
Some families want their own nursery in the photos — the rocking chair, the wallpaper they agonized over, the dog who has no idea life is about to change. Others prefer the ease of a studio, where the lighting's already set and all you have to do is show up in your pajamas.
In-home sessions capture your real life — natural light through your own windows, your baby's actual nursery, siblings in their comfort zone.
Studio sessions happen in my private studio in Youngsville, just north of Raleigh — an easy, relaxed drive for Triangle families who'd rather skip downtown traffic and settle into a calm, dedicated space built specifically for newborn sessions.
Either way works beautifully, and I'll help you decide what fits based on your baby's age, your energy level, and what you're picturing on your walls down the road.
What Makes My Style Different
I shoot with natural light and lean into genuine emotion over stiff, catalog-style posing. You won't find a wall of props or a forced smile squeezed out of a newborn who's clearly ready for a nap — instead, expect soft, believable moments: the curl of a tiny hand, the exhausted-but-glowing look every new parent wears so well. If you want to see more of what this looks like in practice, my lifestyle newborn photography page walks through it in detail.
When Should You Book?
Ideally, reach out while you're still pregnant so we can pencil in a rough window before baby arrives. Sessions typically happen within the first one to two weeks after birth, while newborns are still extra sleepy and bendy — though I always build in flexibility, because babies don't read calendars.
What to Wear
Keep it simple — soft, neutral tones like creams, soft grays, and muted blush photograph beautifully and won't fight for attention with your baby. Avoid busy patterns or logos, and coordinate rather than match exactly, so everyone looks pulled-together without feeling matchy-matchy.
What to Expect During Your Session
Feedings, diaper changes, and mid-session naps are all part of it — a session typically unfolds over two to three relaxed hours, with no clock-watching. You don't need to style a thing or stress over outfits; I'll guide you through simple, cozy setups with you, your partner, siblings, and that brand-new baby smell you'll want to remember forever. For a full rundown on getting ready, mynewborn session prep guidecovers everything from timing to outfits to getting your home camera-ready.
Every pose is approached thoughtfully, with your baby's comfort always the priority. I never rush a session or attempt a pose that isn't appropriate for your baby's age or comfort level that day.

Raleigh Newborn Photography — FAQ
When should I book my Raleigh newborn photographer?
The best time to book your Raleigh newborn photographer is during your second trimester. This ensures your due date is reserved on the calendar in advance, since newborn sessions are limited each month and scheduled around actual birth dates.
Most families book anywhere from 20–30 weeks pregnant, especially if they want a highly experienced, in-demand photographer. Once your baby arrives, we adjust the exact session date based on their birth so the session happens at the ideal newborn stage.
Booking early also allows you to plan your maternity session and newborn session together for a seamless experience.
What is the best age for newborn photos?
The ideal time for newborn photography is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this short window, babies are typically sleepier, more curled up, and still have that fresh newborn look that parents love.
That said, beautiful images can still be created outside this window. If your baby is older, the session naturally shifts to a more alert, expressive style while still focusing on connection and detail.
The goal is never to rush your experience—only to photograph your baby in the safest, most natural way for their age.
How much does newborn photography cost in Raleigh?
Newborn photography in Raleigh typically ranges depending on the photographer’s experience, session style, and product offerings.
At Michelle Gunton Photography, newborn sessions are designed as a full luxury experience, with custom styling, professional editing, and artwork-quality images meant to last for generations.
Rather than a “mini session” model, most families invest in a full portrait experience that reflects the time, care, and artistry involved in safely photographing a newborn.
For exact pricing and collections, families are invited to inquire directly so the experience can be tailored to their needs.
Do you offer studio or in-home newborn sessions?
Yes—both options are available.
Many families choose in-home newborn sessions for a relaxed, personal feel in the comfort of their own space. Others prefer studio-style newborn portraits with a clean, timeless aesthetic and controlled lighting.
The Youngsville studio, just outside Raleigh, is designed specifically for newborn comfort, with a calm environment, natural styling, and everything needed for a safe, unhurried session.
Both options are focused on the same goal: simple, beautiful, connection-driven images of your baby in their earliest days.
What should my baby wear for newborn photos?
Most newborn sessions are styled using soft wraps, neutral fabrics, and simple textures provided by the studio. This keeps the focus on your baby rather than clothing and ensures a timeless look that never feels dated.
If parents choose to bring outfits, the best options are soft, neutral tones without bold patterns or logos. Simple is always best for newborn photography.
Many families also choose skin-to-skin or lightly wrapped setups, which create some of the most natural and emotional images.
Can parents and siblings be included?
Yes, and they are strongly encouraged.
Including parents and siblings is one of the most meaningful parts of a newborn session. These images often become the most cherished because they capture the connection and emotion of your growing family.
Sibling interactions are kept gentle and guided, ensuring the experience feels natural and stress-free for everyone involved.
The focus is always on connection, not posing—creating images that feel real, warm, and timeless.
Is newborn photography safe?
Yes. Safety is always the top priority in every newborn session.
Posing is guided entirely by the baby’s comfort, natural positioning, and responsiveness. No poses are ever forced, and all setups are designed to support the baby physically at all times.
Sessions are also intentionally slow-paced, allowing for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed. If a baby is unsettled, we simply pause and follow their rhythm.
Every decision during the session is made with safety and comfort first.
What if my baby won’t sleep?
It’s completely normal for newborns to be awake during parts of the session.
Even if your baby doesn’t sleep, we can still create beautiful, meaningful images. Awake shots often include eye contact, stretches, yawns, and natural expressions that parents end up loving just as much as sleepy poses.
The session is never dependent on sleep—it’s built around your baby’s natural rhythm.
Patience and flexibility are what make newborn photography successful.
How long does a newborn session last?
Newborn sessions typically last between 1 to 2 hours.
This allows plenty of time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and breaks without rushing. The pace is intentionally slow so your baby remains comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire experience.
We follow the baby’s lead, not the clock, ensuring a calm environment and natural results.
What areas around Raleigh do you serve?

Many families also travel from nearby areas for the studio experience because of its calm, private setting and consistent, natural light.
If you're located anywhere around the greater Raleigh area, sessions can typically be arranged either in-home or at the studio depending on your preference.
